The NIF is the very first step for any expat in Portugal. Without it, you can't open a bank account, sign a rental contract, or register with the health system.
This page covers the most common case. If your situation is slightly different, involves extra paperwork, correspondence, or does not fit neatly into one service, get in touch and we can look at it together.
Get in touchThe NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is Portugal's tax identification number. It's equivalent to a BSN in the Netherlands or a Social Security Number in the US. You need it for virtually everything: opening a bank account, signing a lease, registering with health services, and even buying a SIM card. As an EU citizen, you can get your NIF online but the process is entirely in Portuguese and can be confusing.
